How to use captions and subtitles during virtual meetings and presentations
One of the silver linings of the Covid-19 pandemic is that it resulted in accelerating technology innovations to help more people of all ages and abilities participate in online meetings and classes. Most of us have learned how to create or at least participate in Zoom meetings. The free features of tech tools such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom have dramatically improved and keep on improving as new features roll out.
Our, or at least my expectation of these products has also changed.
As I prepared for the next free TheyMayNotKnow.com webinar that’s all about using captions, subtitles, and transcripts, I found myself exploring tools that I haven’t used recently. I now actually expect that they offer the ability of the user to enable captions, even if the host didn’t set them up all for all to see.
As presented in this webinar, I also searched for the answers to these questions:
Does the tool or platform offer a way for captions to be automatically translated into other languages?
Does the caption or transcription help the viewer know who is speaking?
Is there a way to download a summary of the captions into a document for future reference?
Are the captioning and transcription features already included in the product or do I need to add something or somehow enable them to work?
Is there an additional cost to provide this accessibility feature?
Are the captions or transcripts available right when the event is happening or after a delay?
Are participants empowered to choose whether or not they view live captions and can they determine the size of the text, and location on the screen?
Are the captions created by a trained professional so that they more accurately reflect the content and include sounds that are part of the experience?
Will the captions be captured in the class or meeting recording?
